COCKTAILS IN GREAT HOUSES
Ebenezer Dole House
82 Middle Street, Newburyport, Mass.
Fundraiser for the Newburyport Preservation Trust
The Newburyport Preservation Trust is pleased to invite you to a fundraising event, scheduled for Friday, July 27, 2012 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Mary and Dan Herlihy will host the event, give tours of their house, comment on the restoration process. This half Federal style home at 82 Middle Street was this year’s Preservation Award winner for Interior Restoration, given for exceptional effort to preserve historically significant interior features and finishes.
The home was originally built by Ebenezer Dole in 1810, just one year before the Great Fire of 1811 destroyed over 200 homes and businesses nearby. The façade of the building features a pediment gable supported by two decorative pilasters and the original Federal period entry door. The elaborate moldings feature delicate rope turnings in the cornice and acorn drops. The formal living room features Indian shutters, deep window seats trimmed in period moldings, and wide cornice. The original windows, built from hard first-growth timber, have been painstakingly restored, highlighting their original hand-poured glass.
The restoration and renovation of this property began in July 2010 with painstaking removal of all lath and plaster from the walls and ceilings, while the original woodwork and floors were preserved. This facilitated the installation of all new electrical, plumbing and HVAC services throughout.
The restoration of the house has been a rewarding experience for the owners, who have restored many important buildings. They are proud to offer the Ebenezer Dole house as a contribution to preservation efforts and Newburyport. The Newburyport Preservation Trust awards this effort and is proud to show this house as an example of what can be effectively done to modernize historic homes.
Admission: $20 per person or $30 for two people. Buy tickets online at www.nbptpreservationtrust.org or at the door on the evening of the event.
